Group Transport for Travellers With Limited Mobility

Honest, Comfortable Bus & Coach Hire for Groups Whose Members Can Board With a Little Help, Across Sydney & NSW

Many of the groups we carry, Probus and seniors clubs, aged care outings, church and community groups, include members who use a wheelchair, a walking frame or a mobility scooter, but who are still able to make their way onto a coach with a steadying hand or the help of a companion. Sydney Charter Bus Australia is glad to provide comfortable, patient and unhurried transport for groups like these. We want to be completely clear and honest about what we can and cannot offer, so that everyone travels safely and nobody is caught out on the day.

✓ What We Can Offer

  • Comfortable seated transport for passengers who can board and leave the coach steps independently, or with help from a companion travelling with them.
  • Stowage of folded wheelchairs, walking frames and mobility scooters in the luggage compartment.
  • A patient, unhurried boarding pace, with no pressure on timing.
  • Help loading and unloading stowed mobility equipment.
  • Friendly drivers who will wait as long as the group needs.

✗ What We Cannot Offer

  • Our vehicles are not wheelchair accessible. They have no ramps and no lifts.
  • Passengers cannot remain seated in a wheelchair while travelling. Everyone must transfer to a standard coach seat.
  • Our drivers are not trained in disability assistance and cannot physically lift, carry or transfer a passenger.
  • We cannot carry a passenger who is unable to board the coach steps with their own or a companion’s help.

⚠ Please read before booking. If a passenger needs to remain in their wheelchair for the journey, or requires a ramp, a lift, or hands-on help to board and move about, our service is not suitable and we would not want you to book it. In that case you need a dedicated wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) or an NDIS transport provider whose vehicles and trained staff are built for that purpose. We would genuinely rather point you to the right service than take a booking we cannot fulfil safely. Please see the section below.

Who This Service Suits

This kind of transport works well for groups whose members are largely independent but appreciate a steady, patient service. In our experience that includes a great many community outings.

Probus & seniors groups Where most members are mobile and a few use a frame or a folding wheelchair for distance but can manage a few steps with a hand.
Aged care & retirement outings Where care staff or family companions travel with the group and can assist their own residents or relatives on and off the coach.
Church & community groups Mixed groups where members look after one another and a companion is on hand for anyone who needs a steadying arm.
Family groups Where an older relative uses a scooter or frame that can be stowed, and family members travel alongside to assist.

The Companion Rule, and Why It Matters

Because our drivers cannot provide hands-on personal assistance, any passenger who needs help to board, move about or alight must travel with a companion, carer or family member who can provide that help. This is not a formality. It is how we keep every passenger safe, since the driver’s responsibility is the vehicle and the road, not personal care. When you book, please tell us how many passengers in your group have mobility needs and confirm that a companion will be travelling with anyone who needs assistance. We will then recommend the most suitable vehicle, for example the Toyota Coaster, which has a lower step and a wide aisle that many groups find easier than a full-size coach.

If You Need a Fully Accessible Vehicle

If anyone in your group needs to stay in their wheelchair for the journey, or needs ramp or lift access, or needs trained hands-on assistance, please book a service designed for that. You deserve transport that is genuinely built for the need, and we would rather help you find it than have anyone arrive to a coach they cannot board. Good starting points include:

Wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) operators Specialist operators run ramp and hoist-equipped vehicles where passengers travel secured in their own wheelchair.
NDIS registered transport providers For NDIS participants, registered providers offer accessible vehicles with support workers trained in disability assistance.
Transport for NSW accessibility services Information on accessible community and point-to-point transport options is available through Transport for NSW.

For more on our standard approach to accessibility and the conditions of travel, see our Accessibility page and Disability & Accessibility Policy.
