When a Bus Makes a Difference

When a large number of family members and friends need to travel together from a church, a home, a funeral parlour or a place of worship to a cemetery, crematorium or wake venue, organising individual cars is rarely practical. Parking near many Sydney cemeteries and crematoriums is limited. Coordinating a convoy is stressful under any circumstances, and particularly so for those who are grieving. A single chartered bus or minibus collects everyone from the same point, travels together, and delivers the group to each venue as a single party.

This is not a complicated service. It is transport, handled properly, at a time when the family should not have to think about it.

Common Services We Provide

Service Detail
Church or residence to cemetery or crematorium The most common funeral transport requirement. A single vehicle or small fleet collecting family and close friends from the service venue and travelling together to the committal or graveside service.
Funeral home or parlour pickup Collection of mourners from a funeral parlour or viewing venue before transfer to a church, chapel, cemetery or crematorium.
Cemetery or crematorium to wake venue Transfer of the group from the committal to a wake, reception, club or hotel venue. Where the wake venue has limited parking or is in an area that is difficult to access independently, the bus simplifies the transition for the whole group.
Full-day circuit service A single vehicle allocated for the full sequence of service locations across the day, collecting at the first venue and remaining available through the church, cemetery, crematorium and wake, returning the group home at the conclusion. Common for families whose members are travelling from multiple residential areas in the same region.
Interstate or regional return travel Where family members have travelled from interstate or regional NSW for the service and require transport between accommodation, service venues and return departure points. A private bus is often more practical than coordinating taxis across a group of people in an unfamiliar city.
Memorial services and anniversaries Group transport for memorial services, Remembrance Day events, ANZAC Day dawn services, memorial walks, graveside anniversary gatherings and any commemorative occasion where a group needs to travel together.

How We Handle Funeral Transport

The following reflects how SCBA approaches this type of service. It is worth reading if you are organising transport on behalf of a family and want to understand what to expect.

Vehicle presentation All SCBA vehicles are clean, well-maintained and professionally presented. For funeral services, we ensure the vehicle is immaculate and that the driver is appropriately dressed. Dark or formal attire for the driver is standard on funeral and memorial services.
Punctuality Funeral services operate to fixed times and the consequences of late arrival are not recoverable. SCBA’s drivers arrive at pickup points well in advance of the scheduled departure time on funeral services. If you have a service start time, advise us when booking and we will plan the pickup time to allow a comfortable arrival margin.
Discretion Our drivers conduct themselves with the quiet professionalism this type of service requires. There is no unnecessary conversation, no intrusion and no pressure on timing. The driver waits patiently at each venue until the group is ready to move.
Mobility requirements Funeral groups frequently include elderly passengers, people with limited mobility and those using walking frames. Advise us at the time of booking of any mobility requirements and we will ensure the driver provides appropriate boarding assistance and that the vehicle seating is suitable for the group. See our Accessibility page.
Flexibility on the day Funeral services do not always run to schedule. A graveside service that runs longer, a family member who needs additional time, a wake that extends beyond the planned window. The driver is prepared to hold and wait. Where a service runs substantially beyond the agreed itinerary, additional waiting time charges may apply at the standard rate. We will always communicate before those charges apply.
Single point of contact When you book with SCBA, you deal with one company. We own our vehicles and employ our drivers. There is no subcontracting layer and no broker in the arrangement. The person handling your enquiry is the person coordinating your service. Call 1300 468 199 at any point before or during the service if you need to make contact.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Vehicle selection for funeral transport is straightforward: match the vehicle to the number of people travelling together. The following is a brief guide. For full vehicle details, see our Fleet page.

Group Size Recommended Vehicle Notes
Up to 12 Toyota Hiace Commuter or Mercedes Sprinter Compact, easy to park near most Sydney cemetery and crematorium entrances. Suitable for a small family group.
Up to 20 Toyota Coaster Low-backed seats, wide aisle and comfortable boarding. Recommended for groups including elderly or mobility-assisted passengers. Good access clearance for most venue driveways.
Up to 24 Mitsubishi Rosa Practical for medium-sized groups travelling between service venues. Narrow aisle; for groups with passengers of limited mobility, the Coaster is preferred.
25 to 34 34-seat Midi-Coach Coach-grade comfort with underfloor luggage storage. Suitable for larger family groups, particularly where some members are travelling with overnight bags or where the service involves regional travel.
35 and above 42 to 57-seat Touring Coach For large extended family gatherings or community memorial services. Full coach comfort, underfloor luggage, reclining seats. Advise us of any venue access constraints, as full-size coaches require adequate turning clearance.

If you are unsure of the correct vehicle for your group, contact us and we will recommend the most appropriate option. For a full guide to vehicle selection, see our Choosing the Right Vehicle page.

Practical Information for Families and Organisers

How to book Call 1300 468 199 or 0413 182 999, or use our online quote form. If calling, let us know it is for a funeral or memorial service and we will handle the enquiry with the appropriate care and priority. Funeral transport bookings are accepted at short notice wherever fleet availability allows.
What information you need Number of passengers, pickup address and time, the service venue addresses in order, the wake venue address if applicable, and any mobility requirements. You do not need to have every detail confirmed to make a preliminary enquiry and hold a vehicle. Provide what you have and we will work with you from there.
Booking at short notice Funerals are rarely planned weeks in advance. We make every effort to accommodate short-notice funeral transport bookings. Contact us as early as you can and we will confirm availability and hold the vehicle provisionally while you finalise the details. Call directly for urgent bookings rather than using the online form.
Funeral directors and industry referrals Funeral directors, RSL clubs, Probus clubs and aged care networks are welcome to refer families to SCBA for group transport. We do not pay referral fees and maintain no commercial arrangements with funeral service providers. We can be listed as a transport resource by any organisation that wishes to refer clients to us. Contact our bookings team for a formal information sheet suitable for distribution to clients or members.
Payment Payment by EFT, credit card or debit card. For families who prefer to pay by invoice following the service, this can be arranged by prior agreement. See our Payments page for all payment methods.
Onboard conduct Standard SCBA conditions of carriage apply to all services. Bottled water is permitted at all times. Food and other beverages are not permitted under Passenger Transport (General) Regulation 2017 (NSW). Seatbelts must be worn throughout the journey. The driver may be asked to keep the cabin quiet if the group requires it.

For Probus Clubs, RSL Branches and Aged Care Networks

Many Probus clubs, RSL sub-branches and aged care communities receive requests from members for funeral transport assistance, particularly where elderly members have no family nearby or where the extended group of friends and fellow members wishes to attend a funeral together. Sydney Charter Bus Australia is available to assist with these bookings directly, and we welcome referrals from membership organisations and aged care providers.

For members of a Probus club or RSL who have lost a fellow member, a single phone call to 1300 468 199 is all that is needed to arrange group transport. We will handle the logistics with the family’s details held in confidence. If your organisation would like a contact card or information sheet for your members, contact our bookings team and we will arrange one.

For ongoing or repeat referrals from a club, RSL branch or aged care provider, a standing arrangement can be put in place. Contact us to discuss.
