Credit Card Surcharges | Effective 1 January 2026
Sydney Charter Bus Australia applies credit card surcharges in accordance with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) surcharging standard and the requirements of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). All surcharge rates reflect our actual cost of card acceptance as provided by our payment service provider — they are not excessive, and we are required to be able to substantiate them if requested by a consumer or the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
The ACCC has identified card surcharge compliance as a key enforcement priority for 2025–2026, and has confirmed that surcharges must not exceed the merchant’s actual cost of accepting that card type. The rates below represent Sydney Charter Bus Australia’s confirmed cost of acceptance per card network, effective 1 January 2026.
| Card Type | Surcharge Rate | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Visa — Personal Card | 1.77% | Standard consumer Visa debit and credit cards issued to individuals |
| MasterCard — Personal Card | 1.77% | Standard consumer MasterCard debit and credit cards issued to individuals |
| Visa — Commercial Card | 2.5% | Corporate, business or purchasing Visa cards issued to organisations |
| MasterCard — Commercial Card | 2.5% | Corporate, business or purchasing MasterCard cards issued to organisations |
| American Express (AMEX) | 3.5% | All American Express cards. AMEX has voluntarily agreed not to impose no-surcharge rules in Australia. |
| Diners Club | 3.5% | All Diners Club cards. Surcharge conditions are set per merchant agreement. |
| P-Card (Schools only) | 1.28% | NSW Government Purchasing Card — accepted for school and education bookings only |
| Non-Australian / International Card | 3.85% | Base rate 2.53% + Transaction fee 0.88% + Approval fee 0.44% = 3.85% total cost of acceptance for internationally issued cards |
All surcharges represent Sydney Charter Bus Australia’s actual cost of card acceptance and are compliant with the RBA surcharging standard and the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). Effective 1 January 2026. Rates are subject to review if our cost of acceptance changes. Note: From 1 October 2026, changes to the RBA’s surcharging framework may affect whether Visa and Mastercard surcharges can continue to be applied — we will notify clients of any changes. See ACCC — Card Surcharges for further information.
Regulatory context: From 1 October 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia has announced it will lift its current ban on ‘no surcharge’ rules for Visa, Mastercard and eftpos. From that date, these card networks may ban businesses from applying card payment surcharges when accepting their cards. Sydney Charter Bus Australia will notify clients of any changes to our surcharging arrangements as and when they take effect. Until that date, current surcharge rates as published above remain in force. The ACCC’s 2025–2026 enforcement priorities include ensuring all card surcharges are disclosed clearly before payment and do not exceed the merchant’s actual cost of acceptance. Our surcharges comply in full with these requirements.
