In a group of 20 runners, no two people will finish at exactly the same time. In a group of 50 runners, the spread between the fastest and slowest finisher can easily exceed two hours. The City2Surf finish time for a given group depends on fitness level, start wave, Heartbreak Hill performance, hydration stops, first aid needs, and how much celebrating happens along the way. Beyond finishing the run itself, participants then need time to:

Walk from the finish chute through the crowd to the designated meeting point
Collect a post-race bag, medal, banana and water from the event village
Cool down, stretch and recover — this alone takes 15 to 20 minutes minimum after a 14km run
