About Taronga Zoo Sydney — History & Fun Facts
Taronga Zoo has one of the more colourful origin stories in Sydney’s history. The zoo began life in 1884 in an area known as Billy Goat Swamp at Moore Park, under the name Moore Park Zoo, run by the Zoological Society of New South Wales. Its opening collection comprised 228 mammals, 552 birds and 64 reptiles. By 1912 the Moore Park site was no longer adequate for the growing collection, and the NSW Government granted land at Taronga Park in Mosman, a headland on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. The new zoo opened on 7 October 1916, and most of the animals from the old zoo had to make the journey to their new home by barge up Sydney Harbour.
The zoo took its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “beautiful view,” and the name proved prophetic. Taronga Zoo Sydney is located on Bradleys Head Road in Mosman, on the shores of Sydney Harbour. The zoo spans 28 hectares of beautifully landscaped and hilly terrain, creating a unique environment where winding paths and leafy walkways lead visitors from one animal encounter to the next. It expanded steadily through the 20th century, adding a giraffe house in 1923, an aquarium in 1927, and tiger enclosures in 1939. Today it is home to more than 5,000 animals across more than 350 species, many of them threatened or endangered.
Local knowledge: The land on which Taronga Zoo sits is Cammeraigal Country, part of the territory of the Eora Nation. The Cammeraigal people lived on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour for tens of thousands of years before European settlement. The name Taronga, meaning “beautiful view,” was chosen specifically to honour the remarkable harbour setting the NSW Government had selected for the zoo.
Taronga is operated by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia, a NSW Government agency. It is open 365 days a year, from 9:30am to 4:30pm (May to August) and 9:30am to 5:00pm (September to April). Admission includes daily keeper talks and presentations at no extra charge.
🏫 School Excursions to Taronga Zoo
Taronga Zoo is one of the most popular school excursion destinations in New South Wales. It functions as a living classroom, combining wildlife encounters with conservation education, keeper talks, and curriculum-aligned programmes. For schools across Greater Sydney, a Taronga Zoo excursion is a genuine highlight of the school calendar.
Sydney Charter Bus Australia provides fully accredited school excursion transport to Taronga Zoo for primary and secondary schools across all Sydney councils. Every vehicle in our fleet is Transport for NSW accredited, seatbelted throughout, and our drivers hold all required NSW Government authorities. We are trusted by schools from the Inner West, North Shore, Western Sydney, Eastern Suburbs, South Sydney and the Northern Beaches.
For school groups, the practical advantages of a private charter bus over public transport are considerable. The group travels together, departs and arrives together, and the driver can be briefed on the school’s specific pick-up and drop-off requirements including school gate access. Teachers have a guaranteed return vehicle rather than navigating public transport with a large student group after a full day at the zoo.
See our school excursion transport guide for full compliance information, including our student transport risk assessment and anaphylaxis management policy. Get a school excursion quote →
👪 Family Groups & Birthday Outings
A private charter bus for a family group Taronga Zoo outing removes every friction point from the day. No splitting into multiple cars. No arguing about parking on Bradleys Head Road. No navigating Sydney Harbour Bridge traffic with a carload of excited children. One vehicle, one pick-up, one shared experience from the moment you leave home.
For birthday outings, the charter bus becomes part of the event itself. Pick up the birthday group from a central address, travel together to the zoo with your own space and atmosphere, and return at the end of the day on a schedule that suits your group rather than the public transport timetable.
For family groups attending Roar and Snore overnight stays (see below), the charter bus is particularly valuable. The check-in time is 5:15pm with a 5:45pm start, meaning groups arriving late into the afternoon face peak-hour Sydney Harbour Bridge traffic. A private minibus or coach handles the approach, the drop-off at the Taronga Zoo main entrance on Bradleys Head Road, and the return pickup the following morning after the 9:30am checkout, taking guests directly home or onward to their next destination.
🏔 Roar and Snore — Sydney’s Ultimate Zoo Overnight Experience
Check-in: 5:15pm | Start: 5:45pm | Concludes: approx. 9:30am next day | Suitable for ages 5 and over
Roar and Snore is Taronga Zoo’s flagship overnight experience and one of the most distinctive things you can do in Sydney. The experience has been operating at Taronga Zoo since 1999, and the revenue generated goes directly to looking after the animals, not just those at the zoo but all those throughout the world protected by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia.
Roar and Snore is an unforgettable safari-style overnight stay at Taronga Zoo Sydney. Guests fall asleep to the sounds of the wild and wake to stunning views overlooking Sydney Harbour, with special animal encounters and behind-the-scenes tours exclusive to overnight guests. The programme includes a guided night safari through the zoo, keeper talks, gourmet dining with drinks, and a morning animal encounter before the zoo opens to the general public.
Roar and Snore offers a unique opportunity to stay in Taronga Zoo’s campsite with views of Sydney Harbour on one side and Lions, Sumatran Tigers and Meerkats on the other. Guests wake the next morning to a glorious sunrise, the roar of a lion or an elephant trumpeting, before experiencing the zoo before the general crowds arrive.
Taronga also offers the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga, a luxury boutique eco-retreat within the zoo grounds, combining elegant rooms with harbour views, immersive animal encounters and modern Australian dining for guests wanting a more refined overnight experience.
For groups attending Roar and Snore or the Wildlife Retreat, a private charter bus from Sydney Charter Bus Australia is the most practical transport solution. The Bradleys Head Road approach from the city or suburbs during afternoon peak hour is straightforward in a private vehicle but complex for larger groups on public transport. Our drivers can drop your group at the Taronga Zoo main entrance and arrange a return pickup the following morning at a specified time, returning everyone directly to their home addresses or onward destinations in a single coordinated movement. Contact our team to discuss your Roar and Snore transport logistics.
🏢 Corporate Events at Taronga Zoo
Taronga Zoo is among Sydney’s most prestigious private event venues. The zoo offers a range of unique event spaces overlooking Sydney Harbour for corporate functions, product launches, gala dinners, client entertainment and team-building programmes. Behind-the-scenes keeper experiences and private animal encounters can be incorporated into corporate event programmes.
For corporate groups attending events at Taronga, private charter transport is the obvious and professional choice. A single well-presented coach or minibus picks up the group from office or hotel, handles the Sydney Harbour Bridge approach, delivers guests to the Bradleys Head Road entrance, and remains available for a coordinated return at the end of the event.
Our meet, greet and assist service is available for interstate and international guests attending corporate functions at Taronga, including airport collection and hotel pickup as part of a full-day programme. Multi-vehicle coordination for larger corporate events is managed through a single point of contact. Request a corporate event quote →
🏊 Probus, Seniors & Social Groups
A Taronga Zoo outing is one of the most popular requests we receive from Probus clubs, RSL groups, bowling clubs and seniors organisations across Greater Sydney. The zoo’s combination of spectacular harbour views, accessible walking paths, café facilities and world-class animal exhibits makes it an ideal full-day outing for any group.
For seniors groups, the practical value of a private charter bus is particularly high. The Bradleys Head Road approach involves a steep entry to the zoo precinct that can be challenging on public transport for passengers with limited mobility. A private charter bus delivers the group to the entrance and collects them at the end of the day, with the driver handling all logistics so group organisers can focus on the experience rather than the transport.
Our drivers are patient, experienced and professional with senior passengers. All vehicles are air-conditioned with comfortable seating, and our team will discuss any accessibility requirements at the time of booking. See our accessibility information page for full details.
