The Sydney Royal Easter Show — History & Fun Facts
The Sydney Royal Easter Show began in 1823, making it one of the oldest annual events in Australia. It was initially held at Parramatta, then moved to Prince Alfred Park in 1869, and from 1881 was held at Moore Park for 116 years, the site now occupied by Fox Studios Australia and the Entertainment Quarter. In 1998, the Show made its final move to the purpose-built Sydney Showground at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, where it has been held every year since.
The Show is produced by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), an organisation established in 1822 whose mission is to support and promote Australian agriculture. Getting to the Sydney Royal Easter Show — Transport Tips
Sydney Showground is located within the Sydney Olympic Park precinct at Homebush Bay. The Main Gate is on Olympic Boulevard, close to Olympic Park Station, and the Plaza Gate is near the P1 carpark. The journey from Sydney CBD by car or bus takes approximately 25 to 40 minutes under normal conditions, but traffic during the Easter Show period across the M4, Parramatta Road and the Olympic Park precinct is significantly elevated, particularly on weekend mornings and on the final Saturday of the Show.
Key practical notes for Easter Show transport planning:
- Your Show ticket includes public transport — all tickets for the Sydney Royal Easter Show include same-day return public transport to and from the event via Opal card tap-on at Olympic Park Station or designated bus stops
- Car parking sells out. The Sydney Olympic Park Authority advises that car parks sell out across the Easter Show period and pre-booking is required.
