The History of Vivid Sydney
The idea that became Vivid Sydney was sparked in London in 2007, when Australian event designer Anthony Bastic saw illuminated buildings lighting up the city at night and asked himself why Sydney had not done the same. Bastic, who was then CEO of Destination NSW, proposed using 3D projection mapping technology on the most recognisable canvas in Australia, the sails of the Sydney Opera House. The NSW Government supported the concept, and on 26 May 2009, the first Vivid Sydney switched on under its original name, Smart Light Sydney.
The inaugural festival drew approximately 230,000 visitors, with the first signature installation being a double-sided projection by musician and artist Brian Eno, titled “77 Million Paintings,” which animated the Opera House sails in shifting patterns of light and colour. That year’s music programme was also curated by Eno, setting a precedent for ambitious creative programming that has defined the festival ever since.
The name was changed to Vivid Sydney to better reflect the three original pillars of Light, Music and Ideas. Attendance grew steadily through the early years, reaching 500,000 in 2012 and 800,000 in 2013. When the festival was extended to 23 consecutive nights in 2016, more than 2.3 million people attended. In 2019, a record 2.4 million people visited, making Vivid Sydney the largest festival of its kind in the world that year, injecting more than $171 million into the NSW visitor economy. In 2023, attendance reached a new all-time record of more than 3.28 million visitors across the 23-night programme.
In 2026, now in its 16th year, Vivid Sydney introduces daytime programming for the first time in the festival’s history, with talks, installations and food events beginning before the lights switch on each evening. The festival spans four pillars: Light, Music, Minds and Food, with more than 80 per cent of all programming free to attend, including the entire 6.5-kilometre Vivid Light Walk.
