About the Bathurst 1000 — History & Fun Facts

The race that became the Bathurst 1000 began in 1960 at Phillip Island as a 500-mile race for Australian-made production sedans. It moved to Mount Panorama in 1963, initially run as the Armstrong 500, and became a 1000-kilometre race in 1973. The event has been held at Mount Panorama every year since, making it the longest-running motor race at a single venue in Australian history.

Mount Panorama itself is a public road circuit 6.213 kilometres in length, with 174 metres of elevation change between the lowest point at Hell Corner and the highest at Griffins Bend. For the rest of the year, the roads that form the circuit are open to the public at a 60km/h speed limit. During race week, those same roads see cars exceeding 300 km/h down Conrod Straight. The combination of street-circuit character, dramatic elevation, and outright speed makes Mount Panorama unique among permanent racing facilities in the world.

Sydney to Bathurst by Coach — The Journey

200km via Great Western Highway  |  Approx. 3.5 to 4.5 hrs by coach  |  Through the Blue Mountains  |  Penrith → Lapstone → Katoomba → Lithgow → Bathurst

How Long Does the Trip Take by Charter Bus?

The drive from Sydney CBD to Bathurst covers approximately 200 kilometres via the Great Western Highway, M4 and the Blue Mountains route through Penrith, Lapstone, Glenbrook, Wentworth Falls, Katoomba, Blackheath, Mount Victoria, Lithgow, and then descending to the Central Tablelands plateau into Bathurst. In a private car under normal conditions, the journey takes approximately 2 hours and 38 minutes.

By private charter bus or coach, the realistic one-way travel time from inner Sydney to the Bathurst 1000 entry gates at Mount Panorama is 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on several factors:

Factor How It Affects a Coach
Vehicle speed limits Coaches are limited to 100km/h on open highways. However, on the Blue Mountains grades (particularly the climb from Lapstone to Katoomba and the descent into Lithgow), coaches operate at lower speeds due to the vehicle’s weight, gear changes, engine braking requirements, and road safety obligations. Plan for noticeably longer travel times than a car on mountain sections.
Race week traffic The Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains carries significantly elevated traffic volumes during the Bathurst 1000 race week, particularly on Thursday and Friday arrivals and on Sunday and Monday departures. The stretch through Katoomba and the mountain village townships regularly sees congestion. Allow additional time and depart early or late to avoid the peak traffic window.
Pickup locations Groups picking up from multiple Sydney locations add time to the departure leg. A group picking up from five different suburbs adds 30 to 60 minutes to the total journey time before the coach even reaches the M4. Plan pickups efficiently and depart early.
En route stops If your group plans to stop at Katoomba, Leura, or Lithgow on the way, factor 30 to 60 minutes per stop into your total travel estimate. These stops are well worth making but require honest time planning.
Return journey The Monday morning after the race sees the Great Western Highway through Katoomba and Mount Victoria become very slow, without fail, as tens of thousands of attendees head home simultaneously. Departing Bathurst early on Sunday evening after the race concludes, or very early Monday morning, significantly reduces this risk. Our drivers plan return routes strategically.

The journey from Sydney to Bathurst by road is approximately 200km, with Bathurst described as 200km northwest of Sydney, approximately 2.5 hours by car. By coach, allow a minimum of 3.5 hours under ideal conditions, and up to 5 hours during peak race traffic periods.

Things to Do En Route — Sydney to Bathurst by Coach

One of the great advantages of travelling to the Bathurst 1000 by private charter bus is the ability to stop where you like, when you like, on your schedule. The Great Western Highway route through the Blue Mountains passes some of Australia’s most spectacular and historically significant landscapes. Here are the best stops between Sydney and Bathurst for groups making a day of the journey.

Stop Distance from Sydney What to Do Allow
Penrith 50km Gateway to the mountains. Good fuel and food stop at the base of the climb. Penrith Panthers heartland for the sports fans. 15 min
Leura Village 100km One of the Blue Mountains’ most charming village high streets. Heritage shops, cafes, chocolatiers and galleries. Popular with Probus groups and families. The Blue Mountains Chocolate Company is a favourite stop. A short drive from Wentworth Falls lookout. 30-45 min
Katoomba / Echo Point 105km The Three Sisters rock formation at Echo Point is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Australia. The three sandstone pillars rise from the Jamison Valley at 922, 918 and 906 metres respectively. Echo Point lookout is a 5-minute walk from coach parking. Scenic World (Scenic Railway, Cableway, Skyway) is nearby for groups wanting more than a lookout. 30-60 min
Lithgow 145km A rugged coal town at the foot of the western Blue Mountains escarpment. The Zig Zag Railway, recently reopened after years of restoration, is a heritage steam train experience through the cliffs and forests of the mountains — a genuine engineering marvel from the 1860s. The Zig Zag Brewery is also worth a visit for groups wanting a pre-race refreshment. Lithgow is the last significant services stop before Bathurst. 30-60 min
Bathurst CBD 200km Australia’s oldest inland European city, gazetted in 1815 by Governor Macquarie. The Bathurst CBD has excellent cafes and restaurants along William Street and the historic town centre. The National Motor Racing Museum is located adjacent to the Mount Panorama circuit at the end of Conrod Straight and is a must-visit for motorsport groups arriving a day early. 30-60 min

All stops above are coach-accessible. Scenic World requires advance booking for timed entry. The Zig Zag Railway runs on select days and tickets sell out, so book in advance for race week. Add en route stops when requesting your quote so we can factor them into the total hire time accurately.

Our Bathurst 1000 Charter Bus Services — Every Type of Group

👪 Families & Mixed Groups

The Bathurst 1000 is genuinely a family event. Grandparents, parents and children all share the experience of the mountain, the noise, the colour and the atmosphere across the four-day race week. A private charter bus from Sydney removes every logistical problem the family group faces: no arguments about which route to take, no designated driver discussions, no worrying about parking on the hillside paddocks at Mount Panorama, and no separating at the end of the race to find multiple cars in the dark.

We can pick up from a single address or from multiple meeting points across your Sydney suburb, combine the group on the coach, and deliver everyone to the Bathurst 1000 entry gates together. On the return, your driver is at the pre-agreed pickup point when the post-race fireworks finish. No one gets left behind. View our full fleet →

🏁 Social Clubs & Supporter Groups

The Bathurst 1000 has one of the most passionate regular attendance cultures of any sporting event in Australia. The same social clubs, friendship groups and fan collectives have been making the trip from Sydney every year for decades. Many have t-shirts. Several have flags. A dedicated few have branded camping chairs in team colours.

For social clubs and supporter groups, a private charter bus is both the most practical and most enjoyable way to travel. The pre-race mood on the bus, the post-race debrief on the way home, and the knowledge that everyone arrived and returned safely make the charter bus a cornerstone of the Bathurst experience rather than just a mode of transport. We have transported supporter groups of every code, colour and level of passion to The Mountain. We understand the assignment. Get a group quote →

🏢 Corporate Charter Packages

The Bathurst 1000 is an increasingly popular corporate entertainment event, with hospitality suites and corporate trackside experiences commanding premium pricing and selling out well in advance. For corporate groups attending hospitality packages at The Mountain, the transport experience should match the event itself.

Our corporate Bathurst 1000 charter packages typically include pick-up from the client’s Sydney office or CBD hotel, a comfortable coach journey with all provisions for the trip, direct delivery to the corporate gate or hospitality suite entrance at Mount Panorama, and a coordinated return to Sydney at the end of the race day. Multi-vehicle coordination is available for larger groups. Our meet, greet and assist service is available for interstate and international guests joining the group from Sydney Airport or CBD accommodation. Request a corporate quote →

🏃 Probus & Seniors Groups

A Bathurst 1000 day trip is a bucket-list experience for many Probus members and seniors groups who have followed the race for decades on television and want to see The Mountain in person. The combination of the spectacular Blue Mountains scenery en route, a stop at Katoomba or Leura, and then the mountain circuit atmosphere makes this one of the most rewarding full-day coach charters we operate.

For seniors groups, a private charter is the only sensible transport option. The road conditions at Mount Panorama, the hill walking involved in accessing the hillside viewing areas, and the complexity of race-week traffic management make self-drive or public transport challenging. A private coach delivers the group to the gate, and the driver manages all logistics. Get a Probus group quote →

Bathurst 1000 Bus Charter — What to Know Before Booking

  • Book well in advance. The Bathurst 1000 is the most popular long-distance event charter we operate from Sydney each year. Vehicles for the race weekend are often committed months in advance. Do not leave your booking late.
  • Pricing is depot-to-depot. All services are calculated from our Botany depot to your pickup location, through your full day at Bathurst, and back to your final drop-off. The 200km each way means a Bathurst 1000 day charter is a significant operational commitment. Our quotes are transparent and fully itemised.
  • Allow plenty of time each way. A car might do Sydney to Bathurst in 2 hours 38 minutes. A coach through the Blue Mountains on race week is a different calculation. Allow a minimum of 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way, and plan your day around realistic travel times, not optimistic ones.
  • Road tolls apply. The M4 and other Sydney toll roads on the approach are passed to the client as per our Terms and Conditions.
  • Multi-day charters available. Groups staying at Bathurst for multiple days of the race week can book extended charters covering multiple days. See our extended charter policy for details.
  • Pre-service checklist. For long-distance charters, review our pre-service booking checklist before your travel day to ensure everything is confirmed and the group is briefed.
